Dessert for breakfast sounds about right to me! Combining chocolate, raspberries and coconut into a smoothie also sounds like a recipe for deliciousness.
Graeme and I are self-proclaimed smoothie addicts for a few reasons:
1) They are super easy in the morning.
2) We can fit protein, fat and fibre into one tasty glass, which kicks off our morning in the right kind of way.
3) The combinations are endless so you really can have a different smoothie every morning, including the smoothies that you could easily mistake for dessert.
Now, I’ve heard lots of people who have asked me how I can drink “liquid” every morning and feel full, but as someone who was a compulsive cereal eater for the first 22 years of my life, I promise you, it can be done! Plus, it’s not really liquid. It’s real food, combined into a delicious beverage!
We like to add protein powder to our smoothies which keeps us feeling nice and full. If you aren’t a protein powder fan, you can use nut butters or Greek yogurt to pack protein into your morning meal. We also add healthy fats to our smoothies so in this case I added full fat coconut milk. Graeme and I typically add one tablespoon of fish oil (natural flavour) as well, but it’s not required for the recipe below. The combination of healthy fats and proteins ensures an energetic start to your day, without the dramatic crash that grains and sugars provide shortly after they are consumed.
If you are still a skeptic of this whole smoothie business, just try it, once. Maybe even a couple times. I think you’ll realize how much more alert you are…and then there’s no turning back.
Chocolate Raspberry Coconut Macaroon Smoothie Recipe
3/4 cup full fat coconut milk
1/2 cup raspberries (fresh or frozen)
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
1 Tbsp ground flaxseed
2 tbsp unsweetened and shredded coconut, toasted
Option: If you do not have protein powder, you can add 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt and 2 tsp of cocoa powder instead.
Combine all ingredients into a blender or Magic Bullet. Blend until smooth. Enjoy!
