Fish Tacos and Secret Sauce

I never really was a huge fan of fish tacos, but admittedly, I had never given them a fair shot. It wasn’t until I spent a significant amount of time visiting my relatives in California that I began to understand the obsession with fish tacos. They truly are amazing, but in Canada, I don’t feel we have the Mexican influence that the US has, so we really miss out…

Do not fear though! I have found a great fish taco recipe so you won’t have to take a trip down south for an awesome fish taco. Now, the best part of this recipe is the secret sauce, which I’m going to tell you about anyway, so it won’t be a secret anymore. I just didn’t have a good name for it, so “secret” had to do. Anyway, the sauce is a combination of plain Greek Yogurt, onions, jalapenos, cilantro and lime. It truly makes the taco. I suppose I shouldn’t down-play the fish seasoning though. It is pretty great! Each tilapia fillet is seasoned with paprika, oregano, garlic powder, salt, cumin and ground red pepper. Throw those bad boys in the frying pan, toss them on a tortilla, spread some sauce on top and add some avocado slices. Now we’ve got ourselves a Mexican Fiesta and there’s no turning back! Easy as pie.

Fish Taco and Secret Sauce Recipe

1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
2 tbsp fresh lime juice
1/2 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped (more if you are feeling fiery!)
1 cup thinly sliced white onion

1 1/2 tsp paprika
1 1/2 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp dried oregano
3/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground cumin

1 tbsp canola oil
4 (6 ounce) tilapia fillets
8 whole wheat tortillas
1/2 ripe peeled avocado, sliced thin

Put the first 4 ingredients in a food processor and process until they are smooth. Combine them with the onion in a small bowl. If you prefer to process the onions altogether, go right ahead.

Next combine the paprika, sugar, oregano, garlic powder, salt and cumin in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the fish fillets on both sides of fish. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add oil to the pan. Add fish and cook 3 minutes per side approximately, or until the fish flakes easily when you test it with a fork.

Divide the fish and sauce evenly over the tortillas. Add slices of avocado. Serve!
